About Baghdad

Baghdad was born early in the morning of October 27, 2003. Now we're pretty good about knowing when our alpacas are in labor, but Baghdad's dam (mother), Nestle, decided she'd deliver him when we weren't looking. When we went out to the barn to check on her, she was hiding an adorable, wet, little gray boy by her side.
Baghdad quickly grew to be one of our daughter, Katy's favorites. Katy trained him on the halter and on obstacle courses. Baghdad did her well, winning numerous blue ribbons. In fact, Katy and Baghdad took a Youth Championship banner.
So, by now you are wondering why in the world this alpaca is named Baghdad. Let me explain. Don had been in Baghdad working for Ambassador Bremer earlier in the year. He had been asked to return in October, but didn't at my request. After all, we had a number of pregnant alpacas due in October. Good thing because an RPG hit the room he would have been staying in at the al-Rashid hotel. It seemed only appropriate for us to name this cria Baghdad. The above ad shows Baghdad in Saddam Hussein's main palace.
Also, the name Baghdad fit nicely with our theme of naming our alpacas after cities around the world. Our children are then required to know the country and continent where the city is located and must be able to find it on a map.
Baghdad's fleece has made a very soft, beautifully colored, lovely yarn. Actually, he is quite a handsome boy, with a wonderful disposition. He is very friendly and easy to handle. But, he does fight with the other boys every now and then.
Check back from time to time for updates on Baghdad.
