Maputo's Alpaca Yarn from Maryland's Pax River Alpacas
About Maputo
I guess you could say Maputo was a "pot luck" alpaca. We bred his silver gray mother to a fawn herdsire not knowing what color we would get. His mother had a lot of rose gray in her background so we knew the result could be any of a number of colors. Maputo turned out to be a rich, dark chocolate brown.
Now, you are probably wondering where the name Maputo came from. In keeping in line with our farm theme of naming the alpacas born on our farm after a city somewhere in the world (with a few exceptions), we named him after Maputo, Mozambique. Not exactly the most modern city in the world, but an interesting place nonetheless.
Maputo has always been a sweet, gentle boy. Our daughter Katy trained him and showed him in numerous youth classes. She and Maputo won numerous blue ribbons together and a Reserve Youth Championship.
Earlier in 2010 I sent Maputo's fiber to the mill (we use Georgia Mountain Fiber). I was going to blend it with angora rabbit just for fun. Deb at the mill encouraged me not to blend it. "This fleece is gorgeous," she said. I took her advice and am so very glad I did. Maputo's yarn is absolutely gorgeous. Very soft with a very rich chocolate brown color.
